I know i wrote a lot of (really bad) poetry when I was a teen. I probably still do! I haven’t “practiced” all that much since then.

I do like reading poetry (actually, pretty much anything) by kids — especially elementary school kids — because they haven’t been hit over the head with too many “rules.” They push boundaries without even knowing it. Very interesting stuff.

I recently signed on to help a group of youth put together a youth-led writing conference in May and two weeks ago we did an “I Am” poem writing exercise. I was going to post mine in response to this post, but now I look at it again and realize it’s terrible. I am definately NOT a poet – I think I’ll stick to novels. But it was fun to revisit poetry because I used to write a lot as a teen (didn’t we all?).

As strange as it sounds, my favorite place to go on “retreat”? The Best Western in Augusta, ME – I know that sounds ridiculous but it’s a REALLY nice hotel – fireplace, whirlpool tub, room service (really excellent chicken club sandwiches!), and seperate sitting room, plus a great great restaurant (cranberry walnut pancakes!) and a spa onsite. When I’m editing or trying to finish a draft, I pack a bag and go there for three days and it’s amazing not only how much I get done but how rested and rejuvenated I feel when I get back!

You’re welcome, A. R. There are lots of service folk in my family, too, spanning back generations. (Writing military stories is just one way I try to show my love for them and those they serve(d) with.
